Shrader's Electronic Communications is a classic text book that is very accessible. It teaches you the fundamentals of electronics in a way thats easy to understand. It is what got me through my FCC tests over 30 years ago and is still on my desk today. Russ Brown
This is by no means a complete list of books for todays Broadcast Engineering student but it is a list of books that have help a lot of us get to where we are today. Some can be very expensive but look for used ones on eBay or even Amazone.
Steve Lampen's Audio/Video Cable Installer's Pocket Guide is a Great Big small book. It fits in your pocket and is filled with very useful information on all types of cables, from network to audio and video cabling. Everyone should have a copy.
Fundamentals of Digital Television Transmission - by Gerald W. Collins / This great book covers the topic of how todays digital television signal is transmitted to the home. It goes over how the ASI is encoded and how it modulates the TV carrier as well as how transmitters, transmission line and antennas work. Not too many formulas , very readable.
A Guide to Digital Television Systems and Measurements - This is another of Tektronix's great books. It will teach you about digital video and audio and how they relate to analog. The best part, it's free.
DTV Handbook - This is a classic book that covers almost the entire range of DTV from digital audio and video to compression and transmission. Jerry Whitaker has written several books on television and has been part of several standards committees.
Networking A Beginner's Guide - by Bruce A. Hallberg / Although I have not read this book it comes highly recommended by William Blum. It gets you into the the fundamentals of computer networking in an easy to read style. And its on SBE's list of books for getting certified by them.
CCENT/CCNA ICND1 Official Exam Certification Guide from Cisco / Another computer network book and it starts out with an introduction to computer networking concepts and goes on to describe LAN and WANs and IP addressing. I found it very readable and helpful. Of course you can take the exam after reading it. As with all of Cisco's books it does focus on their own equipment but the networking concepts are all the same.
